Hitting a baseball is one of the most difficult feats in all sports. A good hitter is of immense value to a baseball team, even if he can't catch, can't throw, and is a slow runner. The young batter does not necessarily have to be a "power hitter" that knocks the ball out of the park, either.
A reliable batter that can be counted on to make it to first base can be even more valuable than the occasional home run king.
